About this Course
All of our English tutoring programmes are firmly referenced within the current statutory National Curriculum for Key Stages 2 and 3 in England.
Tutoring can focus on specific skills such as Reading, Comprehension, Vocabulary, Spellings, Creative writing processes, Grammar and Punctuation. Equally we can devise programmes to fast track understanding and progress when studying set texts – including Shakespearean plays and a whole array of other class readers and texts or genres.
The process begins with a diagnostic assessment of your child’s specific and personal needs. This is achieved through discussions with parents/carers and ideally with the child themselves, together with an exclusive activity which the student will be asked to complete independently.
Jo will then devise a tailor-made learning programme which accelerates achievement, attainment and enjoyment by systematically addressing needs and gaps (one step at a time) and by simultaneously building on strengths.
Full feedback on attainment and next steps will be regularly supplied as pupils undertake relevant tasks and activities in the context of the tutoring.
Then the bit about all pupils.

Key Stage 3
In full keeping with the National Curriculum for Years 7, 8 and 9, ATHENA Tutoring Services offer personalised support for pupils in Key Stage 3 to enable them to develop high standards of language and literacy, to enhance their command of the spoken and written language, to promote a deeper understanding of literature and to fast-track knowledge and skills within comprehension.
Here we offer tuition in:
-
Reading
Across fiction and non-fiction texts; engaging effectively with set texts including Shakespeare, pre-1914 and contemporary literature, and seminal world literature. Enabling understanding and critical analysis of increasingly challenging texts with regard to vocabulary, text structure, grammar and organisational features have been used to create meaning. Developing inference skills, using reference to the text (including well-selected quotations) to promote well-structured verbal and written answers.
-
Writing
For a range of purposes and audiences using different genre conventions, developing more advanced skills in manipulating grammar and vocabulary for maximum impact, approaches to structuring, plan, drafting, editing and finalising more lengthy written work.
-
Grammar and Vocabulary
Reinforcing skills from KS2 and developing skills in critical analysis of the effectiveness of grammatical structures, vocabulary and literary techniques used in texts studied.
-
Spoken Language
Perfecting understanding and use of formal Standard English and enabling pupils to prepare for, create and rehearse spoken performance requirements.
Learning throughout is directly linked to the texts and assignments that the student is working on at school.
Tutoring sessions will encompass clear foci upon Literal and Inferential Comprehension:
-
Critical Reading
Identifying themes, manipulating evidence from the text, evaluating different responses, understanding social, historical and cultural background, delivering informed and evidence-based analysis.
-
Evaluation
Evaluation of the writer’s choice of vocabulary, grammatical and structural features to convey meaning and create impact
-
Comparing Texts
-
Writing
Writing in a clear, coherent style to describe, explain, summarise, argue, analyse and evaluate; selecting and emphasising key points; using relevant quotations plus detailed textual references; and using correct Standard English (grammar, punctuation and spellings).
Tutoring Specialisms
Our explicit focus is upon personalised, tailor-made learning programmes enabling accelerated progress directly linked to curriculum requirements.
We cater to pupils of all needs, dispositions, confidence levels, and abilities. With extensive experience in working with diverse student requirements, all staff working within the agency of ATS are able to accelerate progress and learning.
This includes providing higher levels of challenge and stretch for those seeking mastery; addressing an array of special education needs, confidence levels and dispositions to enable all to achieve to their full potential; and fast-tracking those who for a host of different reasons have gaps in their skills.
-
For the most able students
In particular, we excel in enabling the most able students to engage with, enjoy and master the most challenging dimensions of English and Maths learning, directly linked to true Greater Depth and high marks/gradings.
-
For those in the middle
Equally, in large, busy mainstream classes, the needs of those in the middle can all too often become overridden by the extremes of the least and most able. This can generate strength gaps in pupils’ repertoires which inevitably impacts upon future progress and attainment. As pupils transfer to secondary, any gaps in learning from KS2 can hinder successful, confident, and motivated transitions – particularly in English and Maths. Our bespoke Maths and English tutoring actively address such needs and fast-tracks both learning and motivation at Key Stage 2 and 3.
-
For students with Special Educational Needs
Furthermore, our tutoring proactively encompasses students with both diagnosed and Special Educational Needs. Resources and approaches are selected and designed that best address specific learning difficulties whilst also identifying and developing underpinning strengths, knowledge, and skills.
